Scout
Scouts are the player characters in PEAK. They are colorful humanoids of ambiguous gender and age with big round heads.
In multiplayer, the player's username is shown above their Scout's head.
Appearance
The appearance of a Scout can be customized in the Airport by using the
Passport, which allows the player to select their Scout's skin color, head accessory, eyes, mouth, headwear, outfit, and sash.

Unconsciousness & Death
Acquiring too many status effects so that stamina has no space to regenerate will make the player slowly lose control of their Scout before finally losing consciousness.
Unconscious players cannot move or use items (but can still emote to a degree). Other players cannot hear unconscious players. Passing out causes the player to drop all items they were carrying.[confirmation needed]
Death timer
When a player passes out, a death timer starts. This timer will slowly tick down unless the Scout is being carried by another player, which they can do even if they are wearing a
Backpack. The timer will also speed up if the player is unlikely to recover from their
Injuries, is in the Fog or is giving up. Picking up an unconscious Scout does not reset their Death timer.
Unconscious Scouts can be revived by their teammates with the help of various healing items, such as the
Bandages,
First Aid Kit,
Cure-All and others, awaking once there is available space for stamina in their Stamina bar.
Once the Death timer expires, the Scout dies and becomes a ghost, leaving a skeleton behind. If the Scout had been infected by a Zombie and not cured before death, their corpse will become another Zombie.
Using the
Cursed Skull kills the user immediately upon use.
Resurrecting scouts
Dead Scouts can be resurrected by an Ancient Statue (except on Ascent 7) or with the help of the
Scout Effigy.
The Book of Bones can also resurrect dead players. However, it transforms these players into living skeletons that ignore most status effects, but take greatly increased rates of
Injury. Using
The Book of Bones when no Scouts are dead turns the user into a living skeleton.
Ghosts
When a Scout dies, they become a Ghost. Ghosts can spectate living Scouts and communicate with them using the in-game voice chat. They are able to rotate around the Scout they are watching by
moving the mouse, as well as move in and out using the
scroll wheel. The Scout being watched can be changed using the
and
keys.
Living Scouts are able to see and hear all Ghosts. Ghosts switch between players visually, making it possible to discern the location of other living Scouts based on their movement. There is also a pronounced Doppler effect if they are talking while switching players. Ghosts can be brought back from the dead by interacting with an Ancient Statue or using the
Scout Effigy.
Trivia
- The body of a Scout is physically simulated in PEAK. This makes the act of climbing, moving through thin or tight passages, and holding or stepping on items more realistic.
- On occasion, the arms and/or legs of a Scout can become locked in positions they shouldn't be, yet mechanically behaving normally for the player controlling the Scout. This is most commonly observed when repeatedly pulling out the
Passport while standing near other Scouts or the walls of the Airport, but can happen in other contexts.

- A T-posed skeleton, spawned when a disconnected player rejoins after a campfire is lit.
