Tropics
Tropics.png
General
Type

The Tropics is one of the two possible second biomes in PEAK (the other being Roots). It follows the Shore and precedes either the Alpine or the Mesa, depending on the map seed. It is comprised of a jungle with giant ivy roots, trees, and vines scattered throughout the cliffside.

Reaching the top and lighting the campfire dispels the fog wall blocking access to the next biome and grants all living Scouts the Trailblazer Badge Trailblazer Badge if they haven't already obtained it.

When playing on the Peak Ascent or higher, the Fog will eventually start rising in this biome.

Features

Trees

Big Trees

Tropics big tree.jpg

Big Trees with thick trunks and branches appear in the Tropics. Their crowns can be climbed and stood on. Luggage may also appear on top of Big Trees.

Reaching the top of a Big Tree grants the Arborist Badge Arborist Badge.

Willows

Tropics trees.png

Willows[1] can also be found in the Tropics. Their trunks are too thin to be climbed, which makes gathering various Kingberries growing on them more difficult. Their trunks can however be slid down to help prevent fall damage.

Vines

Tropics vines.png

Vines can be found throughout the Tropics that connect various points on the mountain. They can be grappled onto similar to ropes ropes, taking very little stamina while doing so. Moving along the vines takes some stamina, but much less than climbing. Hanging on a vine without moving drains stamina at a very slow rate.

Various Berrynanas can grow on vines.

Giant Ivy

Not to be confused with Vines.
Tropics roots.png

Giant Ivy are long roots that burrow in and out of the mountainside. Some of these can be climbed and walked on safely, although this is rare. It is more common for them to be a hazard, see Thorny Giant Ivy.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls can also spawn in the Tropics. The water may make it harder to see the terrain behind it, but otherwise waterfalls are completely benign. Touching the water will knock the player over for a couple of seconds without doing any damage.

Fireflies

Fireflies frequently appear in the Tropics. They are purely visual and have no gameplay effects.

Hazards

Hazard Image Description
Rain Tropics rain trees.png Rain is the main hazard in the Tropics, unique to the biome. Periodically, it will begin to downpour, making all unsheltered surfaces wet and slippery. Climbing on wet surfaces is much slower than usual and consumes more stamina. Additionally, players will slide downwards when holding still. Occasionally this can cause the player to go effectively nowhere or even slide backwards when climbing a sloped wall.
Explosive Bombshroom Bombshroom closeup.png Explosive Bombshrooms can be found on the ground or on the cliffs. They explode upon contact, sending Scouts flying in the direction they came in. They are primarily yellow with splotches of green all over them.
Poison Bombshroom Bombshroom poison closeup.png Poison Bombshrooms can usually be found on the ground, especially near the edges. They explode upon contact, releasing a purple gas cloud that inflicts Poison Poison on any Scouts caught in it. The cloud dissipates after a certain amount of time. Poison Bombshrooms are primarily green with many tiny magenta spots.
Poison Ivy plants Tropics poison bush.png Poison Ivy plants are scattered around the Tropics and inflict Poison 2.5 Poison when touched.
Monstera plants Tropics monstera.jpg Monstera plants look similar to Poison Ivy, but have no purple spots and do not inflict any Poison Poison. Instead, there is a 1% chance of a Tick Tick being attached to the Scout who walks through them.

Ticks will slowly fill the Stamina bar with Poison Poison up to a maximum of 50 while slowly growing in size. They can be easily removed either by the Scout or their allies, turning it into a food that restores Hunger 20 Hunger.

Thorny Giant Ivy Tropics 1.png Thorny Giant Ivy are long roots covered in thorns which inflict Poison Poison on contact, as well as slightly knocking back the Scout. This quality makes them useful as a quick stepping stone for an otherwise impossible-to-climb rock face.
Beehives Bees closeup.png Beehives Beehives can occasionally spawn on Willows. Any Scout that gets too close to a Beehive or picks it up will be targeted by the bees. The bees will sting the provoking player, inflicting Poison 2.5 Poison for every second the player is close enough to the angry bee swarm.

Beehives can be broken by throwing them against a surface, creating four edible Honeycombs Honeycombs, similar to the Coconut Coconuts. Alternatively, throwing an item at a Beehive can also crack it open.

Lava Tubes
Lava tube1.jpg
In the Lava variant, Lava Tubes are present in the Tropics. The lava deals a significant amount of Heat Heat damage, as well as Injury Injury, to players in direct contact with it. Similar to the Thorny Giant Ivy, touching the lava causes knockback.

Variants

The Tropics generates as one of the following variants, each with equal chance of appearing:

Food

The following food items can be found in the Tropics, excluding packaged food from luggage.

Natural Items

The following natural items can spawn in the Tropics.

Tips & Tricks

  • There is a number of useful tricks involving vines:
    • Holding the interact button (Keyboard e.png) while falling near a vine will make you grab it. This can be useful when falling from a great height as you don't have to spam the key in panic. Grabbing a vine in mid-air resets your vertical velocity and allows you to descend safely.
    • Similar to ropes ropes, their teleportation properties can occasionally become handy to reach certain places by giving you a small vertical boost without consuming your stamina.
    • If the rain starts just before you get off a vine, it's usually fine to hang on for a bit until the rain stops, provided you have at least a bit of stamina, since it depletes at a very slow rate when you're idle.

Trivia

  • Sometimes the environment is colored purple rather than green. This is a purely cosmetic change present on some of the maps.

Notes

  1. Jungle_Willow_Tall and similar in the game files.
  2. Although the Green Kingberry Green Kingberry is poisonous, it's almost always beneficial to eat it, since the amount of hunger restored (Hunger 30 Hunger) far outweighs the amount of poison received (Poison 5 Poison).
